Many patients complain that despite following proper diet and regular exercise, they still cannot get rid of fat deposits, especially in the abdominal, lumbar, and flank areas. This problem is also familiar to women after childbirth when it is challenging to restore their pre-pregnancy shapes for a long time. In such cases, liposuction is an effective solution.
What is Abdominal Liposuction, high-definition liposuction
Abdominal, Flank, and Lumbar Liposuction — a plastic surgery procedure for removing excess fat tissue in these areas and creating a beautiful athletic abdomen and waist.
Liposuction is suitable for patients with moderate fat deposits, helping to improve body contours. For patients who are significantly overweight, I recommend losing weight first before considering liposuction.
High-definition liposuction (sport liposuction) is a type of liposuction that focuses on specific areas to create the effect of a athletic abdomen. Various devices may be used. Specifically, less subcutaneous fat is left along the midline from the navel up to the xiphoid process, and on the lateral surfaces over the oblique abdominal muscles, which enhances the natural definition. As a result, the abdomen appears more attractive and athletic.
Sporty Abdomen with Defined Muscle Contours
The degree of definition depends on the patient's initial condition: the more pronounced the natural muscle definition, the more it is enhanced by liposuction. The thinner the subcutaneous fat, the more noticeable the contrast, which is determined by the surgeon. The essence of the procedure is shaping the proportions by contrasting different thicknesses of subcutaneous fat.
To achieve maximum definition, three conditions must be met:
-
Liposuction with contouring: creating indentations that mimic a sporty abdomen;
-
Good skin tone, allowing the contours to be highlighted effectively. If there is excess skin, no matter how much fat is removed, loose skin cannot emphasize the definition;
-
Low body mass index (BMI). For those who want extreme definition without muscle mass, it is recommended to reduce weight to a BMI range of 17.5-18.5 after the procedure.
Important! The degree of contrast set by the surgeon is limited by common sense and the surgeon's aesthetic judgment. One of the most common complications of this procedure is excessive liposuction, leading to deep indentations and irregularities that tend to worsen over time.

For optimal results, it is recommended to reduce weight to optimal levels after the procedure.
High-def liposuction can also be performed during liposculpture. Almost every woman whom I perform liposuction or liposculpture on, I also create an athletic abdomen to a greater or lesser extent. A large percentage of patients are professional fitness instructors who need to have a maximally beautiful figure.
Combination with Other Surgeries
Abdominal liposuction can be combined with almost any surgeries that do not require extensive intervention. In my practice, I often combine 360 liposuction with lipofilling (liposculpture) and rib reshaping, complementing them with corset wearing, diet, and exercise. In this case, there is an opportunity not only to remove local fat traps on the lower back and make the buttocks more rounded, but also to reduce the waist circumference. Rib reshaping (controlled fracture of the lower ribs) is suitable for girls with a wide chest frame and minimal fat layer, when liposuction does not provide the desired result.
Contraindications
Absolute contraindications to liposuction include:
- patient age under 18 years
- oncological diseases
- bacterial or viral diseases in the acute stage
- hemophilia and other hereditary diseases associated with impaired hemostasis (the body's defense system against bleeding)
- endocrine disease in the decompensation stage
- cardiovascular pathology in the decompensation stage
- mental disorders, nervous system damage, exacerbation of somatic diseases;
- decompensated liver and urinary system diseases;
- HIV infection;
- respiratory organ disorders, tuberculosis;
- hypertension;
- thrombosis, varicose veins of the lower extremities;
- diabetes;
- intestinal disorders;
- pregnancy, breastfeeding.
Relative contraindications to liposuction include signs of inflammation on the skin in the area of medical intervention (redness, rash, swelling) regardless of the cause of inflammation.
Procedure Process
The optimal method for forming an athletic abdomen is tumescent liposuction using vibro-cannulas, as this method combines maximum efficiency and minimal trauma, allowing for beautiful contours.

The surgical procedure is performed under general anesthesia using modern types of anesthesia with easy recovery and minimal impact on the body: gas (Sevoflurane) or intravenous (Propofol).
Duration of the operation: from 30 minutes to 2 hours
This method includes several stages:
1. The surgical site is pre-infiltrated with "Klein's solution," which consists of a mixture of local anesthetic, saline solution, adrenaline to constrict blood vessels and prevent their damage, and dexamethasone to reduce inflammation. This is done using a vibro-cannula, which allows for the even distribution of the solution.
2. After the solution is injected, the removal of adipose tissue begins using a vibro-cannula. Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) uses a cannula that moves rapidly back and forth and side to side. This vibration allows the surgeon to remove subcutaneous fat more evenly and precisely, avoiding irregularities and bumps (which can occur with traditional liposuction).
Tumescent vibroliposuction is the least traumatic, causing the least swelling, minimal bruising, and most importantly — this technique allows for a smooth result without defects and bumps.
Rehabilitation
The recovery process depends on the extent of the surgical intervention, the patient's age, and health status.
What You Need to Know About Your Liposuction Recovery (recommendations from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons)
Hospital stay: 1 day
Pain and swelling. Pain is moderate, but it is important to remember that swelling increases in the first 4 days. In the first few days, the doctor prescribes an anti-inflammatory drug, which is also an analgesic and anti-edema agent.
Wearing compression garments: for 4-6 weeks
Physical activity: to be excluded for 1 month
Return to work: possible within 2-7 days depending on well-being
Risks and Complications
Complications usually arise due to non-compliance with the doctor's recommendations and may include:
- Infection of the surgical site due to poor hygiene
- Bleeding due to overexertion and trauma
- Skin pigmentation due to sun exposure without special sunscreens, as well as exposure to tanning beds
- Inflammation triggered by sauna visits, baths, alcohol consumption, and/or narcotic (psychoactive) substances, smoking, active massaging, warming up the surgical area, etc.
Sometimes, due to the individual characteristics of the patient's body, the following complications may occur:
- Thrombosis
- Cardiac and pulmonary complications
- Infectious exacerbations, hematoma
- Seroma (aseptic inflammation, characterized by the accumulation of serous fluid);
- Keloid scars (excessive growth of coarse connective tissue at the puncture site, surgical suture)
Results
Initial results are visible immediately after the procedure. By the 4th day, due to increased swelling, the result may appear less pronounced. However, as the swelling subsides, the result improves. The final result of abdominal liposuction can be seen within 4-6 months
After athletic abdominal and flank liposuction, a relief is formed, creating a more sexual and athletic appearance
The duration of the effect of liposuction lasts a lifetime, but much depends on the patient's health condition, lifestyle, harmful habits, and compliance with the doctor's recommendations. Liposuction permanently removes a certain amount of fat cells in the intervention area, but the remaining cells may hypertrophy if proper nutrition is not followed.
